HITBSecConf2008 Malaysia – Write-UP

Comments Off | This entry was posted on Nov 05 2008

Even tho US is in the middle of a recession crisis, HITBSecConf2008 – Malaysia sees alot of Americans taking their time off from their usual routine back in the states to come down here for our training & conference. I’m not sure of what the official number of attendees are for this year but by the looks of it, it could possibly hit 600 people. Official attendee counts for conference delegates excluding speakers / exhibitors etc were about 700 people; Total count including every single entity during the event is about 800 – 850 people.

We only have 4 training tracks; Structured Network Threat Analysis and Forensics, Bluetooth, RFID & Wireless Hacking, Web Application Security – Advanced Attacks and Defense & The Exploit Laboratory 3.0; as opposed to 7 tracks in 2007 but the response were quite overwhelming considering on average, all 4 classes are completely full and the attendees this year are quite well prepared in accordance to the classes that they registered to. Which is quite good since there were some attendees who doesn’t even know or heard of a single thing about what they’re supposed to be learning of last year and that probably would take up the trainers’ time a bit more than what they anticipated just to teach them basics all over again. A number of those who initially signed up only for training tracks, decided to extend their stay for the conference when they found out our awesome speaker line ups :P

Network Threat Analysis & ForensicsWeb Application Security - Advanced Attack and Defense

Conference day registration officially opens at 7am but there are a few who are already mingling around the area (besides crew & volunteers) as early as 6.45am. Oracle guys came at around the same time as well to set up their huge, red-ish booth up. Thanks for the red cup Oracle, I personally loved it :D

I missed a lot of talks by good speakers as I was assigned to handle our OpenHack booth; which, no one really really tried & won any of the 4 MacBook Airs up for grab. Everyone who came to our previous conferences agreed that Crowne Plaza Mutiara is huge, awesome and better than Westin and Hilton KL Sentral. I couldn’t agree more :D

Due to some unavoidable issue, Dr Anton Chuvakin couldn’t make it this year as our keynote speaker for day 2, so both keynote slots were given to The Pirate Bay guys, TiAMO & Brokep! Both of them are cool guys from Sweden, their slides which are available for downloads via our conference site represents and idealogy that all these MPAA copyright things are a bunch of bullshit and why most of these moguls who are based in the USA loves to think that USA = the rest of the world. As much as end users are made to think that piracy kills the music industry & musicians, TPB reminded us again that musicians earn more if they made their music available for download online since they only got like, 10% of total sales from the huge music companies anyways; that’s robbery in broad daylight if you ask me.

All in all, HITBSecConf2008 – Malaysia was a blast! Thank you for those who attended, speakers, crews, volunteers, and everyone who made it happened. See you @ HITBSecConf2009 – Malaysia ! :D

Cheers :)
